Industry specialists present at Education in Health Informatics seminar

A line up of industry specialists addressed delegates attending the health informatics seminar hosted by Ideal in collaboration with the University of West of England on 19 June.

The seminar programme addressed the current and future needs of education in health informatics, covering news from Connecting for Health, higher education and the commercial sector.  As many Trusts and PCTs nationally are adopting new healthcare technology, presentations covered how clinical and non clinical staff can gain the appropriate knowledge and skills to support organisational change and realise the true benefits of eHealth.

The morning programme included Di Millen, Head of Informatics at NHS Connecting for Health, who presented on the recent relaunch of 'Learning to Manage Health Information - a theme for clinical education'.  For more information please see:

Jane Hadfield, Assistant Director - Head of Learning and Development, North Bristol NHS Trust discussed informatics in workforce development.

Dr Kevin Foreman, Associate Dean, UWE delivered a presentation on strategic planning and performance at UWE.  Rod Ward, Senior Lecturer, School of Health and Social Care, UWE provided a demonstration of Cerner and Tony Solomonides, Reader, Bristol Institute of Technology, UWE discussed health informatics at UWE.

Andrew Raynes, Director of Education Quality and Accreditation, Ideal covered issues relating to responding to the challenge of user training and competence.  Andy provided information on the Care Information System User Competencies and Qualifications (CIS UCQ) framework.  This vocational, competency based, health informatics learning programme has been developed to support the NHS to achieve the benefits of IT enabled change by equipping the workforce with the knowledge and skills appropriate to their roles.

The afternoon programme provided guidance and information pertinant to Trusts embarking on a RiO implementation project.  Ben Breeze, NHS Business Consultant for Perot outlined key considerations and some potential problems associated with business planning and transformation.

Jill de Bene, Southern Delivery Director Community and Mental Health Business Unit, BT offered advice on working successfully with the LSP.

Fianlly, Victoria Wheeler, Operations, Ideal outlined the consultancy guidance, staffing capacity and training capability which Ideal offers to support a RiO implementation project.
